Senior Lesly Mendoza recognized at FCCLA eventLesly Mendoza, estudiante de último año, reconocida en el evento de FCCLA

East Aurora High School senior Lesly Mendoza was recently recognized for her service on the state officer team for the Illinois Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. The special recognition took place at the FCCLA state leadership conference held on April 9.

Mendoza was one of six students from across the state elected to serve for the 2020-21 school year. The officer team represents nearly 3,000 FCCLA members statewide.

Lesly MendozaAs state officer during a pandemic, Mendoza completed over 138 hours of service for FCCLA, almost all virtually. Her leadership activities included collaboration with EAHS students and students from across Illinois.

Because FCCLA is a youth-led organization, state officers are responsible for planning and implementing state-sponsored events and conferences during the school year.

Mendoza looked back at her year of leadership as eventful and full of memories. She cherished the opportunity to meet other officers from all over the state, coordinate and host statewide conferences and meetings, and, most importantly, the chance to grow as a person.

“I enjoyed having the unique experience of being the only pandemic state officer team in FCCLA history,” Mendoza said. “Not only that, but networking with people from different career fields.”

Kristin Doucette, an EAHS family and consumer sciences teacher and FCCLA adviser, was particularly proud of Mendoza’s accomplishments given the pandemic and a most unusual school year.

“Lesly put in well over 100 hours virtually helping FCCLA run as smoothly as possible while working with five other high school students across the state,” Doucette said. “She played an integral part in helping run the regional, state competitions, and other leadership gatherings.”

Doucette was impressed by Mendoza’s ability to help organize different events, such as several nights of cooking with a chef called “In the Kitchen” and monthly state meetings called “Galaxy Gathering.”

If not for the pandemic, state officers would have gathered in person for several team-building activities and leadership training before working together. However, due to the restrictions, these were held virtually.

Doucette admitted that Mendoza’s workload must have been extreme at times, but that she never complained and made a most unusual year seem flawless. “Working virtually with people was probably one of the biggest challenges since she could not meet other state officers in person.”

“I am so very proud of Lesly being able to juggle so many responsibilities. She ranked in the top 10% of her class, worked, played sports, and served in the state officer position,” Doucette said. “She is truly an inspiring young lady who I believe we will see a lot of in the future.”

While Mendoza is undecided on her college major, she will attend Eastern Illinois University this fall. After applying to EIU in December, she learned that she was eligible to apply for a Presidential Scholarship because she ranked in the top 10% of her class and had a GPA higher than 3.75.

After an interview in February, Mendoza was notified in mid-March that she earned one of the five Pemberton Presidential Scholarships.

The scholarship will cover on-campus room and board (approximately $9,300 per year) plus up to $12,000 per year toward tuition and fees for four years.

Mendoza admits the financial assistance helped steer her toward choosing EIU. However, a recent visit to the campus helped solidify her choice and confirmed it as an opportunity to help her discover her passion.

“I knew it was the place for me,” Mendoza said.

Lesly Mendoza, estudiante de último año del East Aurora High School, fue reconocida recientemente por su servicio en el equipo de oficiales estatales, de la Asociación de Líderes de Familia, Carreras y Comunidad de Illinois de América. El reconocimiento especial tuvo lugar en la conferencia de liderazgo estatal de FCCLA, celebrada el 9 de abril.

Mendoza fue una de los seis estudiantes de todo el estado elegidos para servir, durante el año escolar del 2020-21. El equipo de oficiales representa a casi 3,000 miembros de FCCLA, en todo el estado.

Como oficial estatal durante una pandemia, Mendoza completó más de 138 horas de servicio para FCCLA, casi todas virtualmente. Sus actividades de liderazgo incluyeron la colaboración con estudiantes de EAHS y estudiantes de todo Illinois.

Mendoza consideró su año de liderazgo como lleno de acontecimientos y lleno de recuerdos. Apreciaba la oportunidad de conocer a otros oficiales de todo el estado, coordinar y organizar conferencias y reuniones en todo el estado y lo más importante, la oportunidad de crecer como persona.

“Disfruté tener la experiencia única de ser el único equipo de oficiales estatales para una pandemia, en la historia de FCCLA”, dijo Mendoza. “No solo eso, sino también la creación de redes con personas de diferentes campos profesionales”.

Kristin Doucette, maestra de ciencias de la familia y del consumidor de EAHS y asesora de FCCLA, estaba particularmente orgullosa de los logros de Mendoza, durante la pandemia y en un año escolar de lo más inusual.

“Lesly dedicó más de 100 horas, virtualmente, a ayudar a FCCLA a funcionar de la manera más fluída posible, mientras trabajaba con otros cinco estudiantes de preparatoria, en todo el estado”, dijo Doucette. “Ella jugó un papel integral en ayudar a llevar a cabo las competencias regionales, estatales y otras reuniones de liderazgo”.

Doucette quedó impresionada por la capacidad de Mendoza para ayudar a organizar diferentes eventos, como varias noches de cocina con un chef llamado “In the Kitchen” y reuniones estatales mensuales, llamadas “Galaxy Gathering”.

Si no fuera por la pandemia, los oficiales estatales se hubieran reunido en persona, para varias actividades de formación de equipos y capacitación de liderazgo, antes de trabajar juntos. Sin embargo, debido a las restricciones, estas se llevaron a cabo virtualmente.

Doucette admitió que la carga de trabajo de Mendoza debió haber sido extrema en ocasiones, pero que Lesly nunca se quejó e hizo que un año inusual, pareciera impecable. “Trabajar virtualmente con personas, fue probablemente uno de los mayores desafíos, ya que no pudo conocer a otros funcionarios estatales en persona”.

“Estoy muy orgullosa de que Lesly pueda balancear tantas responsabilidades. Se ubicó entre el 10% superior de su clase, trabajó, practicó deportes y ocupó el puesto de oficial estatal”, dijo Doucette. “Es una jovencita realmente inspiradora, a la que creo que veremos mucho en el futuro”.

Si bien Mendoza está indecisa sobre su especialidad universitaria, asistirá a la Universidad de Eastern Illinois, este otoño. Después de postularse a EIU en diciembre, se enteró de que era elegible para solicitar una Beca Presidencial, porque estaba clasificada entre el 10% superior de su clase y tenía un GPA superior a 3.75.

Después de una entrevista en febrero, Mendoza fue notificada a mediados de marzo que obtuvo una de las cinco Becas Presidenciales Pemberton.

La beca cubrirá alojamiento y comida en el campus (aproximadamente $ 9,300 por año) más hasta $ 12,000 por año, para matrícula y cuotas durante cuatro años.

Mendoza admite que la asistencia financiera la ayudó a elegir EIU. Sin embargo, una visita reciente al campus, ayudó a solidificar su elección y la confirmó, como una oportunidad para ayudarla a descubrir su pasión.

“Sabía que era el lugar para mí”, dijo Mendoza.
